My friend has recently become a grandfather and I would like to congratulate him on that occasion but I am not sure how to say it in German. I thought of "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum ein Großvater werden" but it sounds wrong to me. What would you suggest?

I'd say there really is no good way to translate it literally. And that's a pity. I realised it just now.
It's the same when somebody becomes a mother. We say "Herzlichen Glückwunsch!", but nothing more. Well, there is the possibility of saying "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zur Mutterschaft", but that sounds a bit highbrow. And "Großvaterschaft" definitely does not exist.

The only thing I could think of would be "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zur Geburt deiner Enkelin/deines Enkels". That would work.

I thought of "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Großvater werden" but it sounds wrong to me. What would you suggest?

To me, the original sentence without the "ein" (i.e., "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Großvater werden") sounds OK. Is there any reason why it shouldn't work? Although I didn't get any hits for the complete phrase in Google, I did get several hits for "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Opa werden", which amounts to the same thing, doesn't it?

I honestly don't think it sounds idiomatic. a) He is not becoming a grandpa, he has already become one (if that's good English). b) in case you still like to use this expression, the spelling should be "zum Opawerden", but that looks even worse than the incorrect spelling. ... zum Großvatergewordensein doesn't work either.

Einen herzlichen Glückwunsch an den frischgebackenen Opa! Herzliche Glückwünsche zum ersten Enkelkind!

Still, I would prefer dubitans's best wishes in #2.

I was so surprised about the hits on "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Opa werden" on Google that I had to check it. I guess the hits are either from non-native German speakers or (what is more probable) from Germans in a colloquial setting where they realised what we just realised, namely that there's no good direct way to put it, and said it like that with a wink. I often found smilies with the expression, showing it's not a serious situation.
I can't explain why, but it's definitely not good German, I'm not sure if it's even correct German. Would be far too simple for this language, wouldn't it?

Interestingly, I've used this type of construct in informal circumstances several times with native speakers already, and I haven't yet had any reaction indicating that I've made a mistake or that they don't understand me. But I guess that may be because it's (as you've hinted) a bit of a gray area and they couldn't think of a simpler way of putting it themselves, anyway.

That may be the strongest argument, regardless of the logic, because I'm not convinced that it's always possible to apply logic in such cases. I somehow feel that had such an expression already caught on on a wide scale, or would do so in the future, we'd all suddenly be finding arguments as to why it should be correct after all!
