Wedding wishes to the couple
November 03, 2018 Anniversary Wishes 3 comments

Get inspired with wedding congratulations wishes and messages for the newlywed couple. Text it, email it, or write it on a card, but don't miss.

Figuring out what to write in a wedding card can be tricky! You RSVP’d months ago, you’ve arranged a taxi and you’re looking forward to a glass of champagne. But, how do you write the perfect wedding wish for the happy couple?

You’re over the moon for the bride and groom and you want to let them know just how happy you are for them. The question is, what kind of wedding quote should you use? What are the right words to say? Who knew that wedding wishes were such minefield?

Is writing out a wedding card giving you a serious case of writer’s block? You’re not alone! It’s not always easy to solve what’s appropriate and what isn’t for a wedding message. When it comes to writing out wedding quotes and wedding cards, a few things to consider. Such as:

  • How do you know the happy couple?
  • What kind of ceremony is it?
  • What kind of wedding wishes would they appreciate?
  • Is it a religious wedding?
  • Is the joke you wanted to use really wedding appropriate?
  • Blimey, that’s a lot of questions for the beginning of one article!

But, never fear, Poptop is here! We have put together a collection of ready to use wedding wishes and messages because we’re solid like that! So, in the style of Blue Peter, here’s some we made earlier.

Who is getting married?

Your tone of wedding wish relies heavily on who it is that’s getting married. Think about the relationship you have with the couple to determine what kind of message is right for them. Stuffy Aunt Linda? Probably best to send her something quite formal. Fun Paul from the office? He can take a joke!

Think about the newlyweds. If the couple are close friends or family of yours, then it may be appropriate to write a message that is deeply meaningful, or even hilariously funny! Or, if you are writing a wedding card for a coworker, or someone you know more formally, it might be more apt to stay safe and write them a more traditional style of message.

What to write in a wedding card when you can’t make the wedding:

These days, many couples decide to get married abroad, which can make it difficult for everyone to attend. Others simply plan on having very small and private ceremonies, which means they have minimal guestlist. Their wedding date may simply clash with something else you already have a in. If you, unfortunately, can’t make the wedding, for whatever reason, it is still a lovely gesture to send a wedding card.

  • “Congratulations on your wedding! I/ we wish I/ we could be there to there with you and let you know how special you both are to me/ us. I’m/ we’re so happy for you and couldn’t wish more love or happiness for you! I’ll/ we’ll be with you in spirit until we next see and can celebrate with you properly. Thinking of you both, best wishes on a long and loving life together.”

  • “Dear Emma and John, sending you all the very best on your big day from miles away! We can’t wait to see you together as husband/ wife and wife/ husband to raise a glass to you both! Looking forward to seeing photos of the wedding, but for now, please accept our love and congratulations!”

  • “You are the love of my life, my best friend and now my life partner. I can’t wait to share our lives and grow old together. I love you.”
  • “To my love, you have brought so much happiness into my life. I love you with all my heart and cannot wait to say our vows in front of our family and friends. See you at the altar!”
  • “Today, I give myself to you. I promise to share everything I own, be there for you through good times and bad and love you for the rest of our lives. I feel so lucky to have met you and I can’t wait for our future together as husband/ wife and husband/ wife.”
  • “Thank you for being my best friend and soulmate. Fate brought us together and love carried us here. You bring out the best in me and I promise to spend the rest of our lives bringing love and happiness into yours.”
  • “Today, as we stand in front of family and friends to say our vows, I could not feel prouder to call you my husband/ wife. I promise to always be there for you, to share our ups and our downs, our smiles and our tears. I promise to support your dreams and walk with you hand in hand this journey together. I promise to build a life full of amazing memories with you and I promise to do everything I can to keep our marriage strong and loving. I love you with all my heart.”
  • “Dear John, thank you for making me laugh every day. Thank you for protecting me, learning with me and growing with me. Thank you for loving me unconditionally, flaws and all, and for always being there for me. I love you so much and can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Still can’t think of the words? What about a poem, hymn or song lyrics?

If none of these wishes hit the mark for you, why not consider using the words of a hymn, song or poem? If you need some inspiration, there are lots to choose from!

For example:

  • “I Carry Your Heart With Me” by E.E. Cummings
  • “Love Listen” by Ann Gray
  • “It’s All I Have To Bring Today” by Emily Dickinson
  • “This Marriage” by Rumi

  • “We Pledge To One Another”
  • “Come To A Wedding”
  • “Love Divine All Loves Excelling”
  • “The Grace Of Life Is Theirs”

  • “Your Song” by Elton John
  • “All Of Me” by John Legend
  • “These Arms Of Mine” by Otis Redding
  • “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack

Do you have an inside joke?

Sharing and inside joke is something that only you can do in your unique wedding card. Whether it’s a joke with the couple or the bride or groom individually, including a hilarious joke will mean that this card tells a story directly from you. Whether it’s the time you got drunk at a family party, or had an embarrassing incident at work. If you know that person reading the card will laugh then why not add it as a funny reminder as to what makes your relationship with them special?

For example:

  • “Dear John, congratulations on your special day! Who would have thought on the first day we met at university together, the guy that won the beer pong competition would be getting married five years later!”
  • “To Emma, thank you so much for sharing your special day with us! I’m so glad to call you my friend. Don’t ever forget our awful phase of wearing concealer as a lipstick when we were 18!”
  • “Congratulations on your wedding! Don’t worry, I won’t mention our trip to Ibiza in the wedding speeches!”

Do you have a special memory with this person?

If you share a sentimental memory with the couple, bride or groom, it can make a beautiful addition your wedding card. It can be a story that the couple can hold close to their hearts when reading their cards and will help your wish to stand out.

For example:

  • “Sending all the love in the world on your wedding day! I’ll never forget the time you helped me to pass my exams! You have the patience of a saint and are the kindest soul. Wishing you a world of happiness with your new life partner.”
  • “I’ll always remember how welcome you made me feel on my first day at work! Working with you has taught me so much and I’m so happy to spend today with you and your family.”
  • “Thank you for all the laughs we have shared! Especially on our Sunday mornings playing football! You brighten up the room with your laugh and deserve all the happiness in the world! Congratulations!”

Too cheesy? Go alternative!

If the ‘normal’ style of writing wedding cards seems a bit too cheesy for you, why not think outside the box? Write a message that is uniquely from you and something that nobody else could think of. You could combine a couple of ideas from this list, or you could get totally creative! How about writing a rap? Creating some artwork? Making a video message? Letting your children write or draw in a card for the couple?

How do you end the wedding wish?

Ending your wedding wish with an appropriate tone is just as important as the rest of the wedding message. Here are some options for finishing your card with a lovely, warm feel:

  • “All my/ our love, Isobel.”
  • “Sending love and hugs, Brian.”
  • “Best wishes.”
  • “God bless.”
  • “Warmest wishes, Isobel and Brian.”
  • “Love and prayers.”
  • “Congratulations!”
  • “Lots of love, from Isobel and Brian.”
  • “Love, always.”

Phew! There’s a lot to choose from! You can use these wedding wishes on their own or add your own message into a wedding card alongside one them. Ultimately, the choice is yours as nobody knows the relationship you have with the happy couple better than you.

Finding the right words to say can be tricky, but, nonetheless, very meaningingful to both yourself and the newlyweds.

What to Write in a Wedding Card

The perfect wedding card message should be tailored to the couple, full of sentimental value and crafted from the heart. With that being said, no two wedding card messages will be the same. If you’re feeling pressured to say the perfect words, just don’t. Our wedding card etiquette guide features easy to follow instructions and specific example messages to help you navigate through what to write in a wedding card.

  1. A congratulations is in order. No matter what your personal writing style, this common expression is a great way to warm up your wedding greeting.
  2. Add a wedding wish tailored to the couple. Use the next few lines of the card to create a personalized wedding wish for the couple. Before you begin to fill the blank space, think about your relationship with the couple. What will the bride and groom enjoy reading after their big day?
  3. Thank the couple.  Save a line in your greeting to express your gratitude to the bride and groom for inviting you to be a part of one of the biggest days of their lives.
  4. Sign off with a warm closing. Before you sign your name leave the newlyweds with a warm closing.

Wedding Congratulations Messages

Wishing a couple congratulations is often times an expression people choose to include in their wedding greetings. It serves as a supportive as well as celebratory way to let the couple know they did a great job finding their soulmate (awh.) Saying ‘congrats’ is appropriate never mind which side of the aisle you are sitting on once the ceremony starts. Whether you’ve been best friends with the bride for years and have just met the groom or know both parties all too well, you can never go wrong with a sincere wedding congratulations message. Follow step one from above and pick one of your favorite congrats messages below or add them to your own words to get started on your wedding card.

  • Congratulations to the wonderful two of you!
  • This calls for congratulations and probably champagne.
  • I hope through the years you become even better friends and share every possible kind of happiness life can bring. Congrats.

  • Feeling so much joy for the two of you as you join your lives in marriage!
  • Seeing you two make promises and step forward into the future is so inspiring and wonderful.

Casual Wedding Wishes

After the ceremony when the couple opens their wedding cards they are going to enjoy reading each card for various reasons, but most importantly, because of whom they are from. Be yourself as you are writing your wedding card and make sure that your personality shines. If you are more casual, there is nothing wrong with keeping your wishes short and sweet. Just make sure that you build upon your congratulations and say something charming.

  • Best wishes!
  • We’re/I’m so happy for you!
  • Wishing you lots of love and happiness.
  • Wishing you a long and happy marriage.
  • Wishing you the best today and always.
  • So happy to celebrate this day with you both!
  • Best wishes for a fun-filled future together.
  • Wishing you fulfillment of every dream!
  • Time flies and things change, but I wish that your love for each other would stay unchangeable.
  • You’ve made me believe in true love. And I hope my belief will be unwavering forever, because it seems like you’ll stay together until the end.

Formal Wedding Wishes

You can also use your wedding wishes to mirror the theme of the ceremony. If floor length dresses, glistening chandeliers and lavish centerpieces are a few big day details, look into using one of these formal wedding wishes to express your happiness for the bride and groom.

  • Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness.
  • May the years ahead be filled with lasting joy.
  • Best wishes on this wonderful journey, as you build your new lives together.
  • Thank you for letting me share in this joyful day. I wish you all the best as you embark on this wonderful union.
  • Wishing you joy, love and happiness on your wedding day as you begin your new life together.
  • May the love and happiness you feel today shine through the years.
  • When you two are knotted as one, both families and friends share in oneness of their marital union; may this marriage be a bridge to usher happiness, peace and prosperity.
  • As you step into a new life as new couples, you become treasure to our community and the world.
  • Let love be the focal point of your daily life. May you find hope, peace and faith in each other’s arms.
  • Blessed is the man who finds a wife. May the joy of your new home be filled with laughter, smiles, kisses, hugs, respect understanding and faithfulness. Happy wedlock.

Funny Wedding Card Messages

If you think a funny wedding card message will put a smile on the bride and groom’s faces then go ahead and write something laugh-worthy. Just proceed with caution, you don’t want your wedding message to come off as sarcastic or insincere. Remember that a sentiment that may easily come across as a joke can be taken the wrong way on paper. With that being said, divorce jokes are off limits! Use your best judgement when writing your funny wedding wish and you’ll be well on your way to creating the perfect wedding card with a side of smiles.

Religious Wedding Wishes

Sharing a religious bond with the bride and groom can be the perfect way to tailor your wedding wishes. Think about the couple’s religious beliefs and views before you begin writing your card. Use their practices to guide your religious wedding wishes.

  • May God bless you and your union.
  • May God grant you all of life’s blessings and love’s joys.
  • Love God first and it will be easier to love your spouse second.
