August 19 is observed as the World Photography Day. It is a special day for shutterbugs across the globe and for those who are fascinated by pictures.

The concept of celebrating photography originated after the French government presented daguerreotype process "Free to the World", invented by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre, as a gift to the world on 19 August, 1839.

Today, photography is considered as the most fascinating kind of art and some of the best explorers in the field have captured usual things in the most unusual manner. Why do we celebrate

19th August as

“World Photography Day”

19th Augustis celebrated as "World Photography Day"all over the world every year. Most of us await the day with great enthusiasm and rejoice this day by organizing photo exhibitions, competitions, lectures, workshops, seminars etc. But a very few of us know why 19th August is celebrated as World Photography day. In fact the first announcement of a photograph was made on 19th August, 1839 in France. Francois Arago, 25th Prime Minister of France, on 19th August, 1839, gave a presentation to the French Academie des Sciences and Academie des Beaux Arts, which described Daguerre’s process of photography (Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre was a French artist and physicist. He is recognized for his invention of the daguerreotype process of photography. He is known as one of the fathers of photography). Arago discussed its evaluation, predicted its brilliant future and offered its free use to the world (PSA Journal article, January-1989, 150 Years of Photography, By: Mr. George. E. Helmke, FPSA). In this way, the details of photography process were made public.

The India International Photographic Council (IIPC), New Delhi, under the guidance of its founder,Mr. O. P. Sharma, the world famous pictorial photographer of India, contacted many distinguished photographic luminaries, important ones in the field of photography art and photographic organisations of different countries to set a day to be celebrated as World Photography Day every year. The response was very satisfactory and the proposal was accepted in different countries. India International Photographic Council started celebrating World Photography Day 19th August from 1991. Since then, 19th August is observed as World Photography Day all through the world annually.

World Photography Day 2015: Best Inspirational Quotes By Famous Photographers

happy world photography day wishes

Did you know that August 19th is World Photography Day? That day marks the release of the first practical photographic process, patented in 1839. So let us be the first to wish you a Happy World Photography Day. It has been a great 175 years!

What is World Photography Day? It is a day when we get to take a moment and recognize the artists who have made pictures say a thousand words. Photography has revolutionized the way we see the world. We can share adventures with friends and family in other cities; we can watch grandchildren, thousands of miles away, as they grow up. We can visit exotic and interesting places without leaving our homes. What is the best part about photography today? Thanks to modern technology, we can share poignant moments across the globe in just seconds.

We’ve all seen our share of selfies in social media channels – but who was the first person to capture a selfie? Back in 1839, Robert Cornelius (1809-1893), an amateur chemist and photography enthusiast from Philadelphia is believed to be the world’s first ever selfie taker! We tip our hats to you, sir.

Obviously, Cornelius did not have a smartphone back then, so how did he do it? Robert had set up his camera at the back of his family’s store and captured the image by removing the lens cap, running into the frame, while holding the pose for a minute and then covering up the lens again. On the rear of the daguerreotype, Cornelius wrote, “The first light picture ever taken. 1839.” Simply amazing for 1839.  That makes me wonder if the camera was really invented in the 19th century.

Let’s take a short walk back in time and investigate. The video below briefly takes us through the transition of photography throughout the century. Using cutout animation, this video is a delightful narration of the history of advancement of the camera. (Yes, we know this video skips over motion camera inventions, we still thought it was a nice video that could shed  some light on little known facts about the invention of the camera.)

Do you celebrate World Photography Day? How do you celebrate? Which photographer inspires you the most? Please share your answers in the comments section or on Twitter, Google+, or Facebook where we are always listening.
