A British theologian, author, and Christian apologist, Clive Staples Lewis has His work is still referred to today and has made many people stop and think about a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.

What do you really want in life?

It’s a difficult question, but it may be the essential question.

Maybe you would answer with a concrete response, such as “I want sleep,” “I want a new phone,” or “I want to play more golf.”

Or maybe you would reflect more broadly. Some people even go beyond everyday desires to imagine deep yearnings for something more.

“Sehnsucht” is a popular German word with no simple English translation (click here for pronunciation). C. S. Lewis often relied on this concept in his writings, defining it as “inconsolable longing” for “we know not what.” Instead of “wishful thinking,” Lewis suggested how Sehnsucht involves “thoughtful wishing.” In my words, Sehnsucht has to do with an intense desire for something beyond our human capacity to fulfill. It is a bittersweet feeling that seeks a slice of perfection at the same time that perfection remains elusive.

To better understand, let’s consider some of the ways Lewis reflected on the concept.

In his “Chronicles of Narnia” series, Lewis states:

“Perhaps it has sometimes happened to you in a dream that someone says something which you don’t understand but in the dream it feels as if it had some enormous meaning… a lovely meaning too lovely to put into words, which makes the dream so beautiful that you remember it all your life and always are wishing you could get into that dream again.”

Aim at earth and you get neither.

I have learned now that while those
Who speak about one’s miseries usually hurt,
Those who keep silence hurt more.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself,
Because it is not there.
There is no such thing.

We’re wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.

There are only two kinds of people in the end:
Those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’

Try to say the very thing you really mean, the whole of it,
Nothing more or less or other than what you really mean.
That is the whole are and joy of words.

Mortal lovers must not try to remain at the first step;
For lasting passion is the dream of a harlot
And from it we wake in despair.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end;
If you look for comfort you will not get either comfort
Or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin,
And in the end, despair.

We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.

Any love or goodness or joy worth having.

Because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.

Christianity, if false, is of no importance
And, if true, is of infinite importance.
The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.

Human history is the long terrible story of man
Trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.

To create nice things:
But to convert rebellious wills cost him crucifixion.

To enter heaven is to become more human
Than you ever succeeded in being on earth;
To enter hell, is to be banished from humanity.

C.S Lewis quotes on friendship

C.S Lewis friendship quotes, C.S Lewis quotes friendship

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another:
“What! You too? I thought I was the only one.

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art….
It has no survival value;
Rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.

What draws people to be friends is that
They see the same truth.
They share it.

C.S Lewis quotes on life

C.S Lewis quotes on death, C.S Lewis quotes on pain and happiness

Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose.

Education without values, as useful as it is,
seems rather to make man a more clever devil.

Experience: that most brutal of teachers.
But you learn, my God do you learn.

God allows us to experience the low points of life
In order to teach us lessons that we could learn in no other way.

You are never too old
To set another goal or to dream a new dream.

God whispers to us in our pleasures,
Speaks to us in our conscience,
But shouts in our pains:
It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

The safest road to Hell is the gradual one —
The gentle slope, soft underfoot,
Without sudden turnings,
Without milestones,
Without signposts.

Courage is not simply one of the virtues,
But the form of every virtue at the testing point.

You cannot make men good by law:
And without good men you cannot have a good society.

If you are on the wrong road,
Progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road;
And in that case the man
Who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.

Don’t use words too big for the subject.
Don’t say “infinitely” when you mean “very”;
Otherwise you’ll have no word left
When you want to talk about something really infinite.

One road leads home and a thousand roads lead into the wilderness.

No good work is done anywhere
Without aid from the Father of Lights.

When we lose one blessing,
Another is often most unexpectedly given in its place.

In our own case we accept excuses too easily;
In other people’s, we do not accept them easily enough.

C. S. Lewis Quotes - Page 3

Now a step further. Does loving your enemy mean not punishing him? No, for loving myself does not mean that I ought not to subject myself to punishment – even to death. If you had committed a murder, the right Christian thing to do would be to give yourself up to the police and be hanged. It is, therefore, in my opinion, perfectly right for a Christian judge to sentence a man to death or a Christian soldier to kill an enemy. I always have thought so, ever since I became a Christian, and long before the war, and I still think so now that we are at peace. pg 118

I imagine somebody will say, ‘Well, if one is allowed to condemn the enemy’s acts, and punish him, and kill him, what difference is left between Christian morality and the ordinary view?’ All the difference in the world. Remember, we Christians think man lives for ever. Therefore, what really matters is those little marks or twists on the central, inside part of the soul which are going to turn it, in the long run, into a heavenly or a hellish creature. We may kill if necessary, but we must not hate and enjoy hating. We may punish if necessary, but we must not enjoy it… Even while we kill and punish we must try to feel about the enemy as we feel about ourselves – to wish that he were not so bad, to hope that he may, in this world or another, be cured: in fact, to wish his good. This is what is meant in the Bible by loving him: wishing his good, not feeling fond of him nor saying he is nice when he is not. pg 119, 120

C. S. Lewis Quotes

cs lewis wishing their good

Looking for inspirational C. S. Lewis quotes that will inspire and motivate you?

C.S. Lewis was a prolific Irish scholar, novelist, and author of more than 30 books. He is best known for his ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ fantasy series, which have been adapted into various films.

Arguably the most influential writer of his time, C.S. Lewis is known for his vast works, which continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.

C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland, and he went on to teach at Oxford University. He died on November 22, 1963, in Oxford, England.

Lewis was a pro-Christian writer who used his works to support his faith. His words can teach us about love, God, and life.

In that respect, here are some of the best and most powerful C.S. Lewis quotes to inspire you.

7.) “What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it.” – C. S. Lewis

8.) In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.” – C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis quotes about faith and a higher power

9.) “My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?”  – C. S. Lewis

10.) “It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us; it is the very sign of His presence.”  – C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis quotes on Faith

16.) “To enter heaven is to become more human than you ever succeeded in being on earth; to enter hell, is to be banished from humanity.” – C. S. Lewis

17.) “You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.” – C. S. Lewis

18.) “Friendship is born at that moment when one man says to another: “What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”” – C. S. Lewis

19.) “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C. S. Lewis

20.) “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”  – C. S. Lewis

He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. 34.) “Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person’s ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.”  – C. S. Lewis
