Buddhists sayings about death make it clear they believe death is part of the " Good health is simply the slowest way a human being can die," according to A.

Want to hear some great quotes on mindfulness, one of the best people to listen to (or read from) is Thich Nhat Hanh.

Thich Nhat Hanh quotes on mindfulness are plentiful.

He has been writing books about peace and mindfulness for decades. In fact, Thich has been called the, “Father of Mindfulness” for the sheer immensity of work he has done in that area.

(Sidebar: If you'd to learn more about building the mindfulness habit, I recommend checking out this year-long physical journal that has 365 daily prompts.)

Thich currently is the leader of a network of over 600 monks and nuns, who in turn teach mindfulness to thousands of lay students around the world. Spreading his words of peace, nonviolence, mindfulness, community & love around the world.

In addition to being noted for his amazing contribution to the mindfulness movement. Thich has been a long term fighter for equality & nonviolence. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. once referred to Thich as “an apostle of peace and nonviolence”.

Thich was born to humble beginnings in central Vietnam in 1926. He began his training as a Buddhist at only 16 years old. In the 1960s he began to gain notice for his teachings on engaged Buddhism. (Also known as Humanistic Buddhism). His idea was that, Buddhists needed to be more than just contemplative. They needed to share and promote their wisdom to the world, trying to make changes for the better.

In nearly 90 years of life, Thich has shown himself, again-and-again, to live to these high ideals of promoting change through nonviolence, education and love.

Throughout his life. Thich has maintained himself as a teacher. He has constantly engaged himself in the peace movement around the world. Once being nominated for a Nobel peace prize by non other than Dr. Martin Luther King.

He has run the West’s largest and most active Buddhist monastery, Plum Village. Where thousands of people come to learn,  “practices such as walking meditation, sitting meditation, eating meditation, total relaxation, working meditation and stopping, smiling, and breathing mindfully. “

He has founded the “Wake Up” movement. Which helps young people to receive training on the art of mindfulness and meditation.

Then of course, there are dozens of books he has written on mindfulness, meditation, peace and more. Thich has been an active writer for many years and his books (and the ideas held into them) may be the crowning jewel of a life spent in service to making the world a better place.

These Thich Nhat Hanh quotes are almost exclusively taken from sections of his many books. If you like these mindfulness quotes. Why not check out some of the Thich Nhat Hanh books at the bottom of the page and experience some of the wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh for yourself.

But enough about the great man. Lets get to the goodies. Some great Thich Nhat Hanh quotes, starting below.

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes on Compassion

“When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over. He does not need punishment; he needs help.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“Look at flowers, butterflies, trees, and children with the eyes of compassion. Compassion will change your life and make it wonderful.”

“People deal too much with the negative, with what is wrong. Why not try and see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom?”

“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”

“When we come into contact with the other person, our thoughts and actions should express our mind of compassion, even if that person says and does things that are not easy to accept. We practice in this way until we see clearly that our love is not contingent upon the other person being lovable.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Life

“Our own life has to be our message.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.”

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”

“We are all the leaves of one tree. We are all the waves of one sea.”

“We have to learn to live our life as a human being deeply. We need to live each breath deeply so that we have peace, joy and freedom as we breathe.”

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes on Meditation and Enlightenment

“Enlightenment is growing all the time. It is not something that happens once and is then complete.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.”

“Sitting in meditation is nourishment for your spirit and nourishment for your body, as well.”

“To think in terms of either pessimism or optimism oversimplifies the truth. The problem is to see reality as it is.”

“My actions are my only true belongings.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Joy and Happiness

“Many people think excitement is happiness.... But when you are excited you are not peaceful. True happiness is based on peace.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“If we are not happy, if we are not peaceful, we cannot share peace and happiness with others, even those we love, those who live under the same roof. If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.”

“The seed of suffering in you may be strong, but don't wait until you have no more suffering before allowing yourself to be happy.”

“It is possible to live happily in the here and now. So many conditions of happiness are available—more than enough for you to be happy right now. You don't have to run into the future in order to get more.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Living in the Present Moment

“The best way to take care of the future is to take care of the present moment.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“Life is available only in the present moment.”

“No one has ever lived in the past or the future, only the now.”

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”

“While you are walking, smile and be in the here and now, and you will transform that place into paradise.”

“Yesterday is already gone. Tomorrow is not yet here. Today is the only day available to us; it is the most important day of our lives.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes on Love

“You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“If you love someone but rarely make yourself available to him or her, that is not true love.”

“In true love, you attain freedom.”

“Patience is the mark of true love. If you truly love someone, you will be more patient with that person.”

“True love always brings joy to ourselves and to the one we love. If our love does not bring joy to both of us, it is not true love.”

“When you love someone, the best thing you can offer is your presence. How can you love if you are not there?”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about True Freedom

“Freedom is not given to us by anyone; we have to cultivate it ourselves. It is a daily practice... No one can prevent you from being aware of each step you take or each breath in and breath out.” Thich Nhat Hanh

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free.”

“Buddhism teaches that joy and happiness arise from letting go. Please sit down and take an inventory of your life. There are things you’ve been hanging on to that really are not useful and deprive you of your freedom. Find the courage to let them go.”

“Not talking, by itself, already can bring a significant degree of peace. If we can also offer ourselves the deeper silence of not thinking, we can find, in that quiet, a wonderful lightness and freedom.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Mindfulness

“Mindfulness helps you go home to the present. And every time you go there and recognize a condition of happiness that you have, happiness comes.”- Thich Nhat Hanh

“Every one of us already has the seed of mindfulness. The practice is to cultivate it.”

“For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.”

“If while washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not "washing the dishes to wash the dishes." What's more, we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes. In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can't wash the dishes, the chances are we won't be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus we are sucked away into the future -and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life.”

“Mindfulness is like that—it is the miracle which can call back in a flash our dispersed mind and restore it to wholeness so that we can live each minute of life.”

“The energies of mindfulness, concentration and insight can liberate us from our anxiety and worries. We let go of the past and the future, and come in touch with the wonders of the present.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Taking Calming Breaths

“Your body is your first home. Breathing in, I arrive in my body. Breathing out, I am home.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“Anger is like a storm rising up from the bottom of your consciousness. When you feel it coming, turn your focus to your breath.”

“Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.”

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”

“Your breathing should flow gracefully, like a river, like a water snake crossing the water, and not like a chain of rugged mountains or the gallop of a horse. To master our breath is to be in control of our bodies and minds. Each time we find ourselves dispersed and find it difficult to gain control of ourselves by different means, the method of watching the breath should always be used.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Learning

“Guarding knowledge is not a good way to understand. Understanding means to throw away your knowledge.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“We need to be aware of the suffering, but retain our clarity, calmness and strength so we can help transform the situation.”

“We have to continue to learn. We have to be open. And we have to be ready to release our knowledge in order to come to a higher understanding of reality.”

“There are thousands of channels in our consciousness; it is up to us to choose the channel.”

Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes about Anger and Violence

“People suffer because they are caught in their views. As soon as we release those views, we are free and we don't suffer anymore.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

“People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar.”

“People kill and are killed because they cling too tightly to their own beliefs and ideologies. When we believe that ours is the only faith that contains the truth, violence and suffering will surely be the result.”

“Preventing war is much better than protesting against the war. Protesting the war is too late.”

Books by Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh Classics

Thich Nhat Hanh explains how to acquire the skills of mindfulness and how even simple acts like washing the dishes or drinking a cup of tea may be transformed into acts of meditation.

Old Path White Clouds presents the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha retold by Thich Nhat Hanh in his inimitably beautiful style.

Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. He teaches the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality.

Thich Nhat Hanh brings his warmth and clarity to this unique explication of Zen Buddhism. He illustrates the character of Zen as practiced in Vietnam, and gives the reader clear explanations of the central elements of Zen practice and philosophy.

Thich Nhat Hanh offers an insightful guide to living a fuller life. He illuminates how each of us can incorporate the practice of mindfulness into our every waking moment.

The book describes the four methods of mindfulness: mindfulness of the body, the feelings, the mind, and the object of mind. It teaches how to deal with anger and jealousy, to nurture the best qualities in our children, spouse, and friends, and to greet death with compassion and equanimity.

In lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions (Buddhism and Christianity) meet, and he reawakens our understanding of both.

Thich Nhat Hanh shows the way to overcome our recurrent obstacles to love—by learning to be mindful, open, and present with ourselves and others. This guide to loving also introduces the four key aspects of love described in the Buddhist tradition—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and freedom.

The book provides indispensable insight on the essentials of Buddhist thought and offers a range of simple, everyday practices for cultivating mindfulness. These teachings empower us to witness the wonder of life and transform our suffering, both within us and around us, into compassion, tenderness, and peace in this very moment.

Thich Nhat Hanh's Mindfulness Essentials

The Mindfulness Essentials Series by Thich Nhat Hanh offers clear, simple directions and inspiration for anyone wanting to explore mindfulness meditation in its many forms. Gaudama Buddha, or simply Buddha, was a man of wisdom that lived somewhere between the 6th and the 4th century B.C. Buddhism is based on his teachings, but you don’t have to be a Buddhist to gather inspiration and help from them.  He sought to find what makes a life wholesome and fulfilling and his quotes may help you understand the broad lines of his philosophy.

I’m not an expert on Buddha.  I just gathered his most beautiful quotes and present them to you, along with some of my thoughts.  These quotes have helped me in different situations.  I use them as tools to make my life more happiness oriented.  I truly hope that they will be equally or more useful for you and will help you keep your faith in life and humanity. • Do not give your attention to what others do or fail to do; give it to what you do or fail to do.
  • Your actions are your only belongings.

Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Buddha Quotes about Peace and Anger

  • Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
  • Conquer the angry one by not getting angry; conquer the wicked by goodness; conquer the stingy by generosity, and the liar by speaking the truth.
  • It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.

If a man speak or act with a good thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him.
  • Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.
  • An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.
  • Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.
  • Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.
  • Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

If we fail to look after others when they need help, who will look after us?

  • Those who have failed to work toward the truth have missed the purpose of living.
  • The greatest prayer is patience.
  • In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.
  • Most problems, if you give them enough time and space, will eventually wear themselves out
  • Every experience, no matter how bad it seems, holds within it a blessing of some kind. The goal is to find it.
  • To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

If you truly loved yourself, you could never hurt another.

Buddha Quotes about Change

  • In life we cannot avoid change, we cannot avoid loss. Freedom and happiness are found in the flexibility and ease with which we move through change
  • The universe itself is change and life itself is but what you deem it.
  • Buddha said, “Forgive? But I am not the same man to whom you did it. The Ganges goes on flowing, it is never the same Ganges again. Every man is a river. The man you spit upon is no longer here. I look just like him, but I am not the same, much has happened in these twenty-four hours! The river has flowed so much. So I cannot forgive you because I have no grudge against you. And you also are new. I can see you are not the same man who came yesterday because that man was angry and he spit, whereas you are bowing at my feet, touching my feet. How can you be the same man? You are not the same man, so let us forget about it. Those two people, the man who spit and the man on whom he spit, both are no more. Come closer. Let us talk of something else.

You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger.

Long Inspirational Buddha Quotes

  • Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
  • Words do not express thoughts very well; every thing immediately becomes a little different, a little distorted, a little foolish. And yet it also pleases me and seems right that what is of value and wisdom of one man seems nonsense to another.
  • We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything. That is all.

You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

  • Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it.
Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves.
  • What is evil? Killing is evil, lying is evil, slandering is evil, abuse is evil, gossip is evil, envy is evil, hatred is evil, to cling to false doctrine is evil; all these things are evil. And what is the root of evil? Desire is the root of evil, illusion is the root of evil.

Buddha was asked: What have you gained from meditation? He replied: Nothing. However, I have lost anger, anxiety, depression, insecurity, fear of old age and death.

Give, even if you only have a little.

Even death is not to be feared by one who has lived wisely.

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.

Love is a gift of one’s inner most soul to another so both can be whole.

Let all-embracing thoughts for all beings be yours.

We will develop and cultivate the liberation of mind by lovingkindness, make it our vehicle, make it our basis, stabilize it, exercise ourselves in it, and fully perfect it.

Hatred does not cease through hatred at any time. Hatred ceases through love. This is an unalterable law.

He who loves 50 people has 50 woes; he who loves no one has no woes.

There is nothing so disobedient as an undisciplined mind, and there is nothing so obedient as a disciplined mind.

A mind unruffled by the vagaries of fortune, from sorrow freed, from defilements cleansed, from fear liberated — this is the greatest blessing.

Know from the rivers in clefts and in crevices: those in small channels flow noisily, the great flow silent. Whatever’s not full makes noise. Whatever is full is quiet.

See them, floundering in their sense of mine, like fish in the puddles of a dried-up stream — and, seeing this, live with no mine, not forming attachment for states of becoming.

I will not look at another’s bowl intent on finding fault: a training to be observed.

The external world is only a manifestation of the activities of the mind itself, and the mind grasps it as an external world simply because of its habit of discrimination and false-reasoning. The disciple must get into the habit of looking at things truthfully.

Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought.

Life is like the harp string, if it is strung too tight it won’t play, if it is too loose it hangs, the tension that produces the beautiful sound lies in the middle.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
