When I was a student my teacher told me that you can wish dancers Good Luck, but not break a leg. But then I have had a lot of other dancers tell me otherwise. I haven't ever been able to disprove one or the other. So I was wondering what everyone else used?
On Tue Jun 02, 2009 09:27 PM
I used to work with someone that would say 'break a nail' I thought it was kind of funny. Or you could use "break a sweat". That is all I can think of right now. If I come up with more I will let you know.

When I was in company in high school we said break a leg to each other. When I was dancing professionally we said Merde to each other but that would be inappropriate for my little dancers. I say Fire it up! Dance children, dance! along with break a leg to my dancers before showtime. They love break a leg. It gives them a laugh.

Just say, "Go out, have fun, and wow them!!"
In ballet they say, "Merde", lol, but that is not really good for kids because it means, literally... poop (or sh-t). It is due to the days when ballets were part of the Paris Opera and they used to use live animals on stage. They would yell, "Merde" to the dancers going out so they would not step in it. It became a sort of a "break a leg" of ballet.
Break a leg is theater saying. It says in Wikepedia, "In Britain, the most common idea about the origin of the expression comes from tradition. Historians know from the time of King James I and Shakespeare's King's Men that actors would, on occasion, receive tips on top of their salaries. Rather than receiving tips directly from the company or theatre, tipping was left to the audience . During the final bows or curtain call, audiences would throw money, usually coins, onto the stage depending on how well they enjoyed the performance. In some bad performances they would throw rotten vegetables, but in the good cases, money. Actors would then 'take a knee', effectively breaking their leg line, on stage and pick up the money. As a result, when a person wishes someone to 'break a leg' it refers to wishing them success in their performance so in the end they would have to kneel down and collect a welcoming tip. Theatre evolved and the tradition of tipping changed to one of throwing flowers on stage, as well as presenting flowers."

I have a saying, "break a butt cheek" due to a pre show ritual i started when i was dancing and then brought to my older students. we all stand in a circle and engage in a popcorn circle (any willing student will say a prayer, share a positive thought or compliment about the dancers and/or say how proud they are for each other)hand holding we squeeze each others hands and jump chanting energy several times, then make a silly noise and say break a butt cheek referring to my reminding them that "a cheesy butt face smile is better than nothing"
i was always told that break a leg had to do with the legs (the wooden rod at the base of the old school curtains). that you would get so many encores and standing ovations that the rapid and continuous closing of the curtain brakes it's base weight. I have no idea how accurate that truly is, but it always worked for me.

I always tell them to Dance their Hearts OUt!
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 07:08 AM
I'm plain and simple, I use "Good luck, and more important, have fun".
I was always told never to use break a leg either-I am so clumsy if someone used it with me I probably would!
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 07:52 AM
My one friend, who owns Access Broadway, was told to break a leg at his high school dance concert at Perf. Arts High in NY. He did!! LOL
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 08:24 AM
I say "WORK IT" LOL and my kids love it. THey imitate me and laugh at me when I get all excited and tell them to work it LOL!!!
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 08:39 AM
I tell my kids to "work it out" or "shake what your mama gave you"- that's my teenagers.
But I love the "break a sweat" but never the less break a leg is bad. I have actually performed in a recital an broken a leg, bad memories. Tear!
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 09:00 AM
Wow! I didn't expect to get so much!
I don't use break a leg because I had a friend break a foot during the recital. I'm pretty sure someone probably told her to "Break a Leg". lol
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 09:22 AM
I don't wish my students luck at all. I figure that they don't actually need luck to perform well.
I give them an affirmation or a reminder beforehand, such as "You'll be wonderful" or "Relax, breathe and have fun!" instead.
In the theatre in Australia, we say "Chookas" because G.L. is prohibited and break a leg isn't often used because of the prevalence of dancers in the theatre now.
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:08 AM
I just tell them to have fun, thats what my kids are there for, and they wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it. Break a leg is what I say to my more serious ones.
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:24 AM
I never thought about it, but I don't ever say good luck or anything of the sort. I usually just say "Do good" or "You're going to be awesome".
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 11:20 AM
I love the dancers standing around in a circle saying something positive thing...that's a great idea! In college our professor would come into the dressing room, smack us on the butt and say Merde...that is a great memory but I guess that isn't appropriate for the little ones.
I have a questions...are these rituals something you do with your team kids or with all of your students? Do you walk around to each group and say good luck? Even the babies? It seems like they wouldn't understand good luck.
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 11:49 AM
when I was a kid we had a teacher from New Zealand who said "Chookas!" I never thought I'd hear someone else say it! Me and some of the other girls from back in the day (gah, that make sme feel old) still say it to each other but not to the kids.
We get all the kids except the babies on stage before we start and hold hands in a circle, then someone starts off by squeezing the hand next to them and it goes all around the circle. Lots of hugs and kisses and silent cheering ensue!
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 12:03 PM
We use ' Mucho Poopies' its a joke with the older dancers and backstage crew. It literally means lots of Poo or 'Merde'
At the Worlds we go to the President of IDO, Bill Fowler always shouts out after his little speech 'Break A Leg'
On Wed Jun 03, 2009 01:56 PM
I was just wondering. I tell my students all different things usually something like "you'll do great!" But my older students sometimes need more or I like to put things in the program, and usually it ends up saying the same thing.
In college our professor would come into the dressing room, smack us on the butt and say Merde...that is a great memory but I guess that isn't appropriate for the little ones.
