Happy Situations in Spanish

The wonder of saying the appropriate phrases during a wedding or when a new baby is here is that the language is positive and happy. To practice the following phrases in this lesson, you can perhaps imagine a situation and repeat the new vocabulary aloud, or you could just put it into practice if you want to offer congratulations for an actual wedding or new baby. Saying it in Spanish shows your knowledge, and it's an original way to congratulate.

To begin, the most basic word you can say is felicitaciones, which means 'congratulations' and is pronounced 'feh-lee-see-tah-see-on-ehs.'

Now, say you want to make it sound exciting in writing. To do this, you must first write an opening exclamation mark, which looks upside down, and then the closing exclamation mark as in English. This is simply because in Spanish, exclamation marks are like that. So, you would write this:

La boda (which means 'the wedding,' and is pronounced 'lah boh-dah') is the perfect situation to say or write the word felicitaciones. Another word that means the same is felicidades (pronounced 'feh-lee-see-dah-dehs').

Beyond these simple words, these are the phrases you may want to say or write when congratulating the newlyweds:

  • Felicitaciones a los dos en el día de su boda. (Congratulations to both of you on your wedding day.)
  • Que sean muy felices toda su vida . (May you both be very happy for the rest of your life.)
  • Los mejores deseos en el día de su boda. (Best wishes on your wedding day.)

During the reception, especially when dancing, Spanish speakers usually say the following phrases aloud:

  • ¡Que viva la novia! (Cheers for the bride!)
  • ¡Que viva el novio! (Cheers for the groom!)
  • ¡Que vivan los novios! (Cheers for the bride and the groom!)

When someone says this, everyone replies:

  • ¡Que viva!, which means 'Cheers!' if the reference is for the bride or the groom.
  • ¡Que vivan!, which means 'Cheers!' if the reference is for the bride and groom together.

A New Baby

Bebé ('baby,' pronounced 'beh-beh') requires the feminine article la ('the,' pronounced 'lah') in front if it's a baby girl. Conversely, it requires the masculine article el ('the,' pronounced 'ehl') in front if it's a baby boy.

You can congratulate the parents by saying or writing these phrases once you have seen the baby:

  • Felicitaciones. La bebé está preciosa. (Congratulations, the baby girl is beautiful.)
  • Felicitaciones. El bebé está precioso. (Congratulations, the baby boy is beautiful.)

Whether you have seen the baby or not, you can always say or write these phrases:

  • Felicitaciones por el nacimiento de su bebé (Congratulations for the birth of your baby.)

If you are congratulating a couple who had twins or more, you say or write:

  • Felicitaciones por el nacimiento de sus bebés (Congratulations for the birth of your babies.)

Lesson Summary

Let's take a brief moment to review what we've learned. This lesson provided you with two very basic words that mean 'congratulations:' felicitaciones y felicidades, which mean the same thing. Remember also that you have to make a phrase look exciting in writing, so you should make sure your felicitaciones look like this:

In addition, to make things more personal, you have a list of phrases you can either say or write to offer congratulations for a wedding, such as ¡Que viva la novia! (which means 'Cheers for the bride!') or a new baby, such as, Felicitaciones. La bebé está preciosa. (which means 'Congratulations, the baby girl is beautiful').

Let the romance and elegance of Spanish guitar enhance your wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. I usually play tranquil, beautiful music during the prelude. While you and your party are processing down the aisle, I can play classical pieces such as Canon in D, more exotic Spanish guitar, or special songs of your choice. You may wish some light music during a sand ceremony or candle-lighting ceremony. Finally, I usually play a more upbeat song when you have been married and are recessing down the aisle.

For a cocktail hour, I can up the energy level and play more festive music as you transition from ceremony to celebration.

I can also play ambient music during dinner to help keep that exciting feeling going through the night.

I usually perform as a soloist and bring all my own equipment, speakers, etc. so the music can carry throughout the space you've chosen. I make it a point to control the volume level so the music is audible, but doesn't overpower conversation. I also can bring a percussionist for the cocktail hour/reception, which gives a fuller sound and more energy. For a trio, I can bring another soloist for a more interesting, dynamic texture.

Please visit my website at for videos, sound samples, pictures, and testimonials.
