EFC bantamweight champion JP Buys’s Brave Combat Federation debut ended in controversy on Saturday as he won by disqualification after taking illegal strikes to the back of the head from his opponent Gamzat Magomedov.
Experienced English referee Marc Goddard halted the contest in the second round after a groggy looking Buys was assessed by a doctor at the Nishtar Park Sports Complex in Lahore, Pakistan.
Magomedov, undefeated in his previous three fights, was furious with the decision and a skirmish broke out between the respective camps in the cage, which was quickly contained.
South Africa’s Buys, who trains under Richard Quan at Fight Fit Militia in Johannesburg, appeared to have edged a competitive first stanza, as he dropped the Russian with a straight right.
However, the Dagestani responded well in the second frame, taking Buys down against the fence and administering ground-and-pound before Goddard stopped the fight with 50 seconds left in the round.
The victory improved 22-year-old Buys’s record to (6-2).
He is due to fly home on Monday.
