Words of wisdom - 12 inspiring quotes from volunteers

6 Sep 2016

Volunteering is a unique experience - one that can give you a whole new perspective on life. With this in mind we asked 12 of our volunteers to pass on their words of wisdom. Here's what they said:

"I always wondered why somebody didn't do something about that, until I realised I was somebody"

– Judith Hill – volunteered in Nepal

"Human life is precious and we should all support each other. Look at the global picture, and help where we can"

– Paderic McKen – volunteered in Uganda

"Volunteer with two ears and one mouth, and listen and learn for the people you're working with."

– Andrew Ashe – volunteered in Papua New Guinea

“At the end of my placement in Zanzibar, Tanzania, I was given a kanga (colourful printed cotton fabric) as a parting gift by the students and teachers of a college I had facilitated in. Every kanga has a Swahili quote on it, and mine reads 'nimeridhika na hali yangu' which means 'I am satisfied with my situation'. A wonderful reminder on gratitude and humility that I always try to keep close in mind.”

– Isatou Sey – volunteered in Zanzibar with ICS

“You're the agent of change and people want you to say things and make changes that they may not be able to say or make themselves.”

– Cath Nixon – volunteered in Nepal

“One of the most important things I've done is to plant seeds in people's heads, so that ideas can continue to grow once I've left.”

– Gareth George – volunteered in Nepal

"No single one person will change the world, but when you volunteer you can create the ripple in the tides to creating a better and happier world."

– Megan Lewis – volunteered in Kenya with ICS

“People learn in different ways and you need to be patient, flexible and open to new ideas.”

– Béibhinn Ní Mhuirí – volunteered in Rwanda

"My ICS host mum in Nicaragua once told me 'Every head is a world' (cada cabeza es un mundo), which reminds me to think of things from other people's perspectives and take a while to try to understand where they're coming from."

– Daisy Stella Baldwin – volunteered in Nicaragua with ICS

“In some ways, there's nothing extraordinary about volunteering. I think people have an instinct to help one another and I think some people are answering that instinct when they choose to volunteer.”

– Patricia Gilhooley – volunteered in Ethiopia

"After meeting my host sister who was paralysed from the waist down at 15 months old, but who was therefore able to continue her education and not drop out of school to get married, we decided that every situation is what you make of it."

– Alice Durrant – returned ICS volunteer

"Written above my desk in the office in South Africa - by Nelson Mandela: 'We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.' "

– Adam Bailey,  volunteered in South Africa with ICS
